No update during the past months since everything is running fine.

The 5 machines are now connected to a Gigabit switch. Data can be transfered from machine to machine (RAID to RAID) at a very respectable 60MB/s sustained. We also replaced the RAID0 controllers by 3Ware RAID5 PCI cards, which gives us securized storage on all 5 units.
