PGC-1.3.txt : a subset of the RC3 catalog observed with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) release 4 in ASCII format. Morphological types and Hubble types are listed for each galaxy. The PGC-1.3 consists of all galaxies from the RC3 catalog for which
- there is coverage by the SDSS DR4 release
- error estimates in morphological type are quoted in the RC3 or the Hubble type is 90.0 (I0). The first condition is a guarantee that at least one reasonably reliable source was available for classification (P.Fouqué, private communication).
fits/ : images in FITS format extracted from the SDSS release 4 in the 5 bands u',g',r',i' and z'.
- For each PGC galaxy, in each band, 9 images were obtained directly from the SDSS DAS server
- All galaxies were automatically background-subtracted, resampled and rescaled to 255x255 (using SWarp with Lanczos3 interpolation), in such a way that the blue isophote at mu=25 mag.arcsec^-2 fits right into the central half of the frame. This was done by setting the output pixel scale to 12.0*dexp(log D25)/256 (log D25 is given in the RC3 catalog). The galaxy center is defined by the J2000 coordinates recovered from the SESAME web service at CDS. It should be accurate to a few arcseconds. Several galaxies were offseted by more than 10 arcsec and where manually recentered or excluded from the set.
- All g, r and i images were checked by eye, and about 300 galaxies were removed from the archive because of incomplete coverage in g, r or i. There are 4462 galaxies remaining. Note that u and z were not checked visually, hence some galaxies might be incompletely covered in these bands. Contrary to previous PGC sets, no attempt was made to exclude galaxy images contaminated by bright stars or satellite tracks.
png/ : 255x255 colour images in PNG format generated with STIFF. All images have the same scale in surface brightness. The galaxy images have been resampled in such a way that the blue isophote at mu=25 mag.arcsec^-2 fits right into the central two-thirds of the frame.

Important: this set of small galaxy images is for image decomposition and galaxy classification purposes. All images have been background-subtracted and brought to a common scale to simplify dimensional reduction. This means that the Point Spread Function varies a lot from one image to the next.
